Home Energy Monitors How To Choose Which Is Best
Home Energy Monitors have come along way in a short amount of time. There are now a good number of them on the market, and their options are expanding. We can now look at our home energy data on our mobile phones if we so choose. Next up, we will probably be able to turn appliances on or off from our i pods, the way the current trends are going. There are several useful applications for these home energy monitors, and they do help in reducing power consumption. What is more important is that they reduce the need for electricity, which is the biggest overall benefit for everyone except the power companies, although they are promoting their use as well. I imagine in the long run, it is beneficial to them too, seeing as they can hold off on building new power plants if energy demands don’t increase. And with all the new environmental policies that we want to implement, that can be expensive for them. So, in essence, the longer they can hold off on those projects, the better, for in time when technologies improve along with the costs of those technologies, it will be a benefit to everyone.
There are basically three forms of energy monitors available today, and even those have quite a variety. Following is a brief description of each:
Outlet and Power Strip Power Monitors:
These come as a fairly straight forward package and are the easiest to use and maintain. You simply unplug an appliance, and plug the meter into the socket, and then plug the appliance into the meter. You can then view how much power they are using and how much it costs a month to use in some models. There are also power strips with the same principles implemented, with the only difference being you can plug several appliances or gadgets into the strip and measure their combined electricity consumption. Several different models include the Kill-A-Watt, Wattson, and EED Watts Up Electricity Monitor.
Entire Home Power Monitors:
These are a great asset to any green household. What a whole home power monitor does is read the data from your outdoor electrical meter supplied by the power company and transmit that data of energy consumption back to the display device which you have located inside your home, or at least we hope so. The display can read that data and turn it into a user friendly display format which is easily understood by even the most inexperienced. Some power monitor even have adapters and software which you can connect to your computer and get better views of your data, graphs, charts, and a wide variety of histories. This is the best option in my opinion as you can get a real time feedback regarding the amount of electricity you are using at any given moment. If you turn a device on or off, you will see the display output either increase or decrease. Home Power Monitors are a valuable tool, as it really makes you more aware of how much energy you are consuming day by day, and even hour by hour, instead of just once a month when the electric bill comes. After I got mine, my energy usage declined by 40%, which is a good thing. Before we had one, we never thought about how much we used, nor did we care for that matter. Now with energy prices rising, and expected to continue to do so, it is the best time to look into purchasing one of the home power monitors.
Smart Homes or Smart Monitors
These are the most advanced, and with that of course goes the most expensive of the lot. These devices, such as the Smartlinc and HomeManageables allow you to automate your household appliances and gear and control them remotely. Some of the newer homes are implementing this technology, and I imagine we all will be down the road, but for now, it is mainly for the rich or real serious environmentalists. Eventually we will see us all hooked up to a smart grid which will control all of that on a massive scale. Good news is that this has become a priority and we can be rest assured that we won’t have to wait forever and a day for newer technologies like this to emerge.
Choose Which Home Power Monitor Option Is Best For You!
You can spend days looking through data and specs, reading and researching these. What you really want to do here is to first of all, decide which level you would like to go with. The home power monitor option is probably the best, again, my opinion, but the prices are reasonable, and they do monitor your whole house. Prices on these can range from usually just below $100 dollars US and up, depending on the functionalities. Some of them are more advanced than others, and you will see that reflected in the price as well.
